The WON 2010

The WON Trophies

The Won – January 2010

We had our fourth “The Won” Watford Open Nationals Competition on Sunday the 31st January at Hemel Hempstead Sports Centre, and may I say it was really great to see all of you that attended, helped and turned up to support our fighters.

The competition ran like clockwork again, with a fabulous attendance by fighters and coaches from all over the country.

I would like to start by giving a special mention to the “Referees”, who gave up their time to help us out on the day. They managed to keep the areas running smoothly, dealing fantastically with the normal antics of the fighters and coaches, who needless to say didn’t necessarily agree with their decisions. I thank you all, we couldn’t have done it without you!!!

It amazes me that the standard of the Competition improves so much every year. I witnessed some fabulous bouts, across a whole range of categories. Once again we were praised for our “Novice” sections, which were very well supported, and maybe there were a few glimpses of tomorrows champions!!

It was great to see some Watford Freestyle “Adult” competitors throwing themselves into the mix this year. Team mates Peter Bocancea and Warren Pearson-Smith, found themselves as opponents in the Mens over 75kg Coloured Belts, Light Contact finals, with Peter just managing to pip Warren to the 1st place trophy!!

Our kids sections were also well represented, with Jamie Jordan having a hard fought battle with Korben Ward from Mad Dogs, and coming a valiant second in the Boys under 150cm Coloured Belts Semi Contact final. Shannon Ryan managed to take 1st place in the Girls under 150cm Brown/Black Belt Semi Contact final, beating Helena Sutton of NSKA. Shannon also managed 1st place in the Girls under 150cm Brown/Black belt Light Contact final, beating Shannon Priestly from ABBA Liverpool.
Max Chapman-Tripe also came out the victor in his Boys Coloured Belts under 150cm Light Contact final, beating Matthew Richardson from LKA. There were many more of you that I don’t have space to mention, but well done for taking part, and if you didn’t win a trophy this year, try again next year, or come to some of the other competitions we attend throughout the year and have a go there.

The “Open Weight” Sections were well contested this year. With Prize money of £150, and a Belt, it was well worth having a go.

The Mens section, had some fabulous entrants, Michael “Venom” Page, Daz Ellis, Drew Neil and Damian Sansom, to name but a few. But it ended up as a battle for the title between Daz Ellis and Michael “Venom” Page. What a fantastic title bout, with Daz Ellis proving that Michael has some weak spots, but alas not many. Michael took the title and the prize money, with his usual aplomb, but all of the entrants provided us with some really memorable fights.

The Ladies section, was also well supported this year. However, it was a shame that Lorraine Hughes had to leave early and was unable to compete. We still had many great lady fighters taking part though including Beverly Sturzakor, Rachel House, Emma Steele, Tara Billingham, Yazmin Anderson, Billie Abdullah and Maureen Deardon. The final once again provided an exciting title bout between Beverly Sturzakor of NSKA and Emma Steele of Watford Freestyle. It was a very closely fought bout, with Emma losing to Beverly, who scored the deciding point right on the final bell!! Bad luck Emma, but congratulations to Beverly who took away the prize money and the belt again this year.

The Team events were unfortunately held quite late in the day, and thanks to all of the parents and kids who waited around. The “Kids Team” event was won by Bristol 1 with 41 points, who beat Dorking with 32 points and in third place was Bristol 2 with 26 points.

The Adult Team event was the last section of the day and did not commence until about 7pm. The victors were NSKA (who travelled all the way from Liverpool) who beat Team Top Ten and Dorking Select to take the Team crown.

The Forms sections were also really well supported again this year. Our exclusive “Extreme Tricks Battles” section was a really great event yet again, and Ryan Doyle having this year recovered from his broken leg, once again took the title. But the competition gets a little closer to him every year!!

Before I finish, can I just say it was really nice to see the two Peters, who travelled all of the way from the Czech Republic to compete. They even managed to take trophies home with them!! Also, may I say a huge thank you to everyone who helped set up the night before, and to the Table People, the Registration Desk, once again the Referees, the sandwich girl and not forgetting Marvin the Marvellous our MC man. Considering he had never compared a Competition before, he stepped admirably into Steve Dixons shoes and with the fabulous help of Natasha Ryan, who acted as his right hand woman, managed to pull it off. Well done Marv!! (and Tash)

Even if I say so myself “The Won” competition is definitely turning into a competition not to be missed, so make sure you put us in your diary for next year: 30th January 2011, venue to be confirmed. We hope to see you all there!!!!

The WON Part 2

In this section Naomi Norris took gold with a strong aggressive creative form not forgetting her martial arts roots. In -16 creative open hand we saw Josh Lewis Team Resurrection member take 1st place with rising stars winner Anton Simpson Tidey in 2nd and Joshua Meek in 3rd. In the adult’s division Scott Elliott from Team Elite nailed every kick, trick and punch in his form earning himself a 1st place with Mikey French in 2nd and Georgia Devaney 3rd. In the -13yrs weapons sections Kyle Macdonald with his Bo Staff routine took a 1st place alongside Ellen Michael, in 2nd. Anton Simpson Tidey wowed the crowd with his Extreme Sword form winning gold and Joshua Meek in second with an outstanding Bo Staff form. Now it came to the moment everyone had been waiting for the annual Extreme Tricks Battle with raining champion Ryan Doyle in attendance to defend his title. The first round saw Robert Hughes go head to head with Josh Lewis with both competitors linking moves together, after both competitors had performed it was over to the judges who put forward Robert due to his technical ability. Next was Ryan Taylor against Mikey French, Ryan attempted some difficult moves including a double corkscrew which left the crowd screaming for more but landing is everything and the win went to Mikey. Now it was Ryan Doyle’s time to shine paired with Robert Hughes. Both landed difficult tricks but the win went to Ryan after landing a new move touch down raiz 360. After the second semi final between Team Resurrection members Mikey French and Kyle Macdonald with Mikey going through to the final with his great tumbling skills against the champ Ryan. It was a final not to be missed with both men battling to the end.

It was over to the judges and they awarded it to Ryan who has successfully retained his title as The Won Extreme Tricks Battle champion. Well done to all the forms competitors on the day and the referees who kept the area running throughout.
