Romania 2009
We got to Romania about 2.30pm there time, Adrian met us at the airport with the coach to take us to the hotel, Man the hotel was very posh, we all went to our rooms to freshen up then we all met down stairs in the lobby and headed into town for a bit of sight seeing and shopping, had to get taxi back to hotel, we had a referees seminar to get to which started at 8.00pm.
At the Refs seminar we went through all the theory but we never had time for any practical which means the guys never get tested on any sparring but still qualified, interesting.
Went back to the hotel, all the kids were chilling in Sam, George and Patrick’s room. I sat in the bar sipping a few JDs and coke, chinwagging with Paul, Ben and John.
Thursday 19th November 09, Team Watford, gathered at Luton airport where we met up with Brian Beck, Andy Dsar and Paul Smith’s teams, to form team GB.
After we checked in everyone was feeling a bit peckish so we went and got some breakfast (rip off). We boarded the plane; very good flight had a few jokes along the way with Patrick taking pictures of some random dude fast asleep.
Patrick, George and Sam wanted to go to the fun fair so they could cause chaos on the bumper cars then Brandon decided he wanted to show all of us he could do summersaults on the trampoline. On the way back to the hotel we were passing the ball around which George bought, (trust Brandon to hit a car and set off the alarm)
We all met back at the hotel lobby to go to the venue for the weighing which went very well.
Went back to the hotel for some food, then it was time for the guys to turn in for the night.
Friday 20th
Woke up feeling very tied livened myself up with a shower, me and the girls went down stairs for breakfast about 9.30am. The Watford crew met with Paul’s mob, then we set out in search of some shops, we walked for what seemed miles and found nothing so we headed back towards the hotel, I could not believe it when we found an indoor market about three minutes from the hotel which turned out to be real cool we all came out of there with some great bargains.
We then went over to the Hard Rock, for a bite to eat, got the waiter to take a group photo.
Saturday 21st
Me and the girls got up, showered had breakfast, got on the coach which took us to the competition.
The competition was a little long winded due to the fact we were scratching around for refs, team GB done very well on the day taking away a lot of silver wear, team Watford proved that hard work really does pay with Brandon winning, Bronze in Light contact, Shannon, Gold in Semi contact, Natasha, Gold in both Light and Semi contact, Sam, Silver in Light and Gold in junior boys Semi contact and Gold in the men’s Semi, Patrick, Gold in Light and Semi, George, Gold in Light and Semi, John Gold in men’s Light and Semi.
Shannon, George and Patrick teamed up with Chappers and Rachel, from Centurion Martial Arts and won the junior teams.
Paul Smith, damaged his knee earlier in the individuals and was unable to take part in the adult teams which meant team GB was a fighter down, after a lot of persuasion and nagging from my girls and students I agreed to take Pauls place in the team which was really cool considering I haven’t fought for about four five years, we all won our fights and would have to fight the Romanians or the Bulgarians on Sunday in the final.
We stayed to support the guys competing in the forms who done very well taking a lot of Gold medals. We left the competition about 11.30pm. Headed back to the hotel had some food, sat in the bar had a few drinks then headed up to bed.
Sunday 22nd
Got up bright and early for an early start at the competition which started about 10.30am with team Bulgaria Vs team Romania fighting for the right to challenge team GB in the final. Romania were loosing by a very large margin until the Romanian’s top man (Alex) stepped onto the mat sealing the deal for Romania to face team GB in the finals.
It was a very exiting final with the crowed cheering for there teams unfortunately for the Romanians, team GB were on form and had to settle for second place with team GB taking gold in the adult and junior teams.
Thanks to Adrian, for a great weekend and making team GB feel very welcome
